Day 27: Marengo to Colo

Flipping awesome afternoon riding after a super late start (1.45pm) due to randomly impromptu winery visit after being introduced to owner by locals I was chatting with during breakfast.

Lots of rolling upflats with solid tailwind/side-tailwind all afternoon.

Even pushed 20 miles beyond my start-of-day target!

Day 26: Saulsbury Bridge to Marengo

A great days ride after yesterday’s rest!

Got an early start, after fast 20km a large & tasty breakfast burrito, Art Festival in Iowa City, steady cycling through beautiful surroundings in searing heat and mild headwind.

Don’t think I’ve ever sweated so much!

Early finish as next campsite nearly 40miles away, hoping for similarly good, rested cycle tomorrow.

Day 25: Knoxville to Saulsbury Bridge

Great day of riding, despite late start and big heat, very slight tailwind for most of the day.

Stopped at a winery in western Illinois for tasting (free) then was given a great bbq dinner also – by a guy who does bbq competitions (currently 23rd ranked bbq-chef in the world – I didn’t even realise that was a thing!!!).

Rest day tomorrow.

Day 22: Crawfordsville to Champaign

Upflats and headwinds

This was a seriously tough day! Not much to mention except for the constant climbing and massive headwinds – typically blowing full in my face at reported 29km/h with gusts frequently up to 40km/h.

Given that my average pace is generally about 15-18km/h, such force to push against – and being pushed by – is quite considerable. At one point, I stopped and saw my pace at only 8km/h. Continue reading Day 22: Crawfordsville to Champaign
