So, along with “What bike should I get for my Cross-America cycle trip?” the other big equipment question was: What tent should I get?

After weighing up many options available in the UK and the US, I went with the Vango Helix 200.

It’s ok, very easy to put-up, comes with mesh opening which supposedly improves ventilation and let’s more light in. However,  with only two arches at either end of the tent, there’s plenty of contact between fly-sheet and outer layer so there is both build-up of vapour condensation and drip-through of rain water – ie, the inner tent does get utterly soaking!

But it does the job, is lightweight and cost just over £100 (with Tiso discount card).
